WebRTC IP leaks: why your VPN can still show your real IP

How WebRTC can expose local and public IPs even on a VPN, and how to run a free browser leak test.

VPNs encrypt traffic through a tunnel, but browsers can still gather network candidates for WebRTC (used for video calls and some peer features). Those ICE candidates sometimes include your real public IP or LAN addresses — a classic “VPN leak.”

What a leak test shows

  • WebRTC ICE candidates (host / srflx / relay).
  • Whether any candidate matches your non-VPN public IP.
  • User agent, language, and timezone signals sites can see.

How to reduce leaks

Use a VPN client with WebRTC leak protection, disable WebRTC in the browser if you do not need it, or prefer browsers/extensions that force mDNS host candidates. Always compare the tunnel IP from “what is my IP” with candidates from the leak test.
