Domain WHOIS (RDAP) lookup
Free domain WHOIS via RDAP: check registration status, nameservers, and lifecycle events without a paid WHOIS API.
Domain WHOIS via RDAP returns registry data for a domain name: status codes, nameservers, and lifecycle events when the registry publishes them — without a paid WHOIS API.
What you will see
Modern gTLDs expose RDAP with statuses such as clientTransferProhibited, nameserver hostnames, and events (registration, expiration, last update) when available. Registrant contact details are frequently redacted under privacy laws.
How to use it
Enter the registrable domain (example.com), not a full URL path. If a TLD’s RDAP service is slow or incomplete, try again or check the registry’s own lookup. Pair with DNS lookup to see whether nameservers in RDAP match live NS records.
- Verify expiration events before a migration weekend
- Nameserver mismatches explain “DNS not updating” tickets
- Status codes can block transfers until unlocked at the registrar
Domain vs IP WHOIS
Domain RDAP answers “who registered the name.” IP RDAP answers “who holds the address block.” Use both when investigating phishing infrastructure.
